Full program notes
Duo Ardea presents works by Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce, Tom Jobim, Pixinguinha, and Astor Piazzolla, combining established pieces from the violin and guitar repertoire with original arrangements for the ensemble.
Duo Ardea presents a program that traverses distinct yet interconnected sound worlds of Latin American music. Belonging to Villa-Lobos’s neoclassical phase, Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 is part of a group of works dedicated to the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Ponce, a central figure in Mexican musical nationalism, wrote Estrellita, the theme of the film They Shall Have Music, recorded by Jascha Heifetz, whose version inspired the arrangement presented by Duo Ardea. Jobim and Pixinguinha, though from different periods, captured in their music the atmosphere of twentieth-century Rio de Janeiro, from the urban vitality of choro to the harmonic sophistication of bossa nova. Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango reflects his lifelong mission to elevate the tango from Argentina’s bordellos and dance halls to the concert stages of Europe and America.
