Full program notes

“When Everything Sings” is the culmination of a project that traces my personal history and, above all, the history of Brazilian guitar. It’s impossible to talk about songs without having as a backdrop the lyricism born of a passionate soul. This atmosphere is conveyed both in pieces with lyrics and in those where the sense of singing is so strong that, even without words, the music makes the listener imagine them. In these pieces, the silence of unspoken words could refer to the emotional and psychological resonance that remains when something is left unexpressed. Fortunately, the connection between the works in the program helps the imagination solidify a text that hasn’t yet been written.

But if everything sings, even the “less song-like” pieces can sing; they draw from different sources of inspiration and may be based on arias, on passionate melodies from serenades, or even on the romantic atmospheres of Beethoven and Ronaldo Miranda, who share the same title — Appassionata — with one of the works in the program.

Program:

João Luiz: Prelude n. 5

Manuel M. Ponce: Theme Varie et Finale

4 Brazilian Serenades: Um Amor de Valsa / Choro no. 2 / Se Ela
Perguntar / Carinhoso;

Hermeto Pascoal: June 22nd / Bebê

Ronaldo Miranda: Appassionata
