Schubert String Quartet No. 13 in A minor ("Rosamunde")

Historical context

Schubert's "Rosamunde" Quartet No.13 was premiered in 1824 premiered by Schuppanzigh quartet, also known as Beethovens personal quaryet. Schubert made himself known for his beautiful songs for voice and piano, but was statying to compose more for chamber ensemble. Many composers of this time period wrote songs as they were popular in personal salons for families to enjoy. He also features many melodies from his songs in his quartet works.

Mozart's Quartet No.15 was written in 1783 when he was 27 years old. Joseph Haydn was a huge inspiration for Mozart, also known as "Papa Haydn" and this was one of the last quartets dedicated to said composer. Mozart wrote key elements of this piece while his wife was giving birth, which you can hear throughout the piece as operatic exclamations. Most of the quartet embodies a solemn and dramatic mood, but contains a wonderful major movement to contrast the overall tone well.
