Please join me in welcoming this wonderful duo with cellist, Emileigh Vandiver and pianist, Ava Soifer. They will be performing selections from works by J.S. Bach, Gershwin, Chick Corea, and Piazzolla. The cello sonatas by J.S. Bach were originally written for viola da gamba & harpsichord. Da gamba translates to “of the leg” and so the instrument was performed while being held between the legs. It had a fretted fingerboard and 6 or 7 strings as opposed to the 4 for the modern cello. This concert performs this rarely heard sonata on the “modern” cello and piano. The suite of Gershwin songs was arranged for cello & piano by Alan Gout. The Grand Suite by Astor Piazzolla was composed in 1982 and dedicated to the renowned cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich. Piazzolla’s “Butcher’s Death” is a selection from a larger theater work called “The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night.
