 in me in welcoming this wonderful duo with cellist\, Emileigh Vandiver and
  pianist\, Ava Soifer. They will be performing selections from works by J.
 S. Bach\, Gershwin\, Chick Corea\, and Piazzolla. The cello sonatas by J.S
 . Bach were originally written for viola da gamba & harpsichord. Da gamba 
 translates to “of the leg” and so the instrument was performed while b
 eing held between the legs. It had a fretted fingerboard and 6 or 7 string
 s as opposed to the 4 for the modern cello. This concert performs this rar
 ely heard sonata on the “modern” cello and piano. The suite of Gershwi
 n songs was arranged for cello & piano by Alan Gout. The Grand Suite by As
 tor Piazzolla was composed in 1982 and dedicated to the renowned cellist\,
  Mstislav Rostropovich. Piazzolla’s “Butcher’s Death” is a selecti
 on from a larger theater work called “The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical
