SAROD
About
I’m Souryadeep, a sarod player based in San Jose, California, and I regularly perform across the Bay Area, including San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont, and beyond. I’ve been immersed in Hindustani classical music for over 30 years, training in the Maihar Gharana tradition under Pt. Alok Lahiri. The sarod, with its deep and resonant voice, has always felt like an extension of my own—a way to tell stories and create spaces of reflection and joy.
I’ve had the privilege of performing at prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center in New York, the Chicago Cultural Center, and major Indian classical festivals in the U.S. and India. Yet my favorite concerts are often the most intimate—gatherings where music flows freely, questions are welcome, and everyone feels part of the journey. For me, every Groupmuse is a chance to bring people closer through sound and to share the timeless beauty of this tradition in a personal way.
Music
I perform North Indian Classical music, on sarod—a 25-stringed lute with a deep, soulful tone. My journey began in the Shahjahanpur Gharana under Late Jayanta Roychowdhury at the age of five, and for the past 25+ years I have trained in the Maihar Gharana under Pt. Alok Lahiri. Rooted in a rich history passed down for centuries, this music carries the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Indian subcontinent. Each performance unfolds through ragas—melodic frameworks that evoke moods, seasons, and times of day—from meditative alaaps to joyful improvisations with percussion, the tabla.
Every concert is alive in the moment, shaped by tradition and by the listeners present. I love weaving in semi-classical dhuns, folk music, ghazals, or Rabindrasangeet when requested, creating a shared journey. My experiences in world music collaborations bring fresh colors while keeping heritage at the heart. With stories and gentle guidance, I invite audiences into a timeless world, connected by music.
