About

We are a piano-cello duo based in Bellevue, WA. I'm Isaac Berglind, I play cello, and my wife, Yuan Zhou is a wonderful pianist. We met as fellows at the Taos School of Music in 2022, where we spent 8 weeks playing chamber music together in the Taos Ski Valley. Ever since that summer, we have so much fun playing great pieces together!

Music

We play music that is mostly rooted in the western classical tradition. Our range of repertoire is wide, but the piece that is the most important to us, as a piano-cello duo, is Beethoven's Cello and Piano Sonata in A major, Op. 69. This is the first cello and piano sonata that treated the 2 instruments as equals, where there is constant musical dialogue. Instead of having one instrument keep the melody all to themself, while the other instrument provides accompaniment, this sonata was the first to constantly pass thematic material back and forth between the two instruments. While the cello opens with the main melody of the piece, the piano takes over with it's own take on the melody very shortly after. It's this kind of dialogue we love to explore in our duo, as there are so many incredible sonatas that explore this unique interplay of cello and piano.
