Full program notes

This program synthesizes three musical loves of Good Time Brass - Jazz music, Pop tunes, and Western movie soundtracks! Our show aims to highlight the throughline of individuality, exploration, and creativity present in those three genres. Selections will include a musical suite from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, “Tank!” from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, “Die With A Smile” by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, and many pieces in between!

Historical context

Our performance this evening is linked to the lineage of Brass in jazz, movie soundtracks, and popular music. The nature of brass instruments allows them to seamlessly weave between styles, bringing percussive hits, rich warm chords, and beautiful melodic lines to any setting. From the earliest days of jazz and film scores brass has been a driving force in the energy and texture of the music (Think Louis Armstrong and John Williams), and popular music has integrated that same energy over time with horn lines and solos. We will dive into these traditions in this program while also synthesizing them in original compositions and arrangements.
