Full program notes

Step into the vibrant streets of Naples through music and flavor with Melodies of Naples! This program brings Poulenc’s Napoli suite to life alongside a collection of his solo piano works, woven together to tell the dramatic story of Mount Vesuvius, the towering force on the outskirts of Naples. Through Poulenc’s signature blend of elegance, wit, and lyricism, we journey through the city’s rich heritage, its bustling energy, and the looming presence of the volcano that has shaped its history. And to complete the experience, sfogliatelle, Naples’ iconic pastry, will be served for a taste of the city’s tradition.

Historical context

Francis Poulenc’s Napoli suite was inspired by the lively streets, songs, and spirit of early-20th-century Naples—a city where music and everyday life have always been deeply intertwined. Composed after Poulenc’s travels to Italy, the suite blends French elegance with Neapolitan color, humor, and charm. At the same time, Mount Vesuvius — long a symbol of both beauty and danger — has shaped Naples’ history for centuries, adding a dramatic backdrop to the city’s vibrant culture.

This program reflects that mix of lightness and intensity, celebrating Naples through Poulenc’s playful voice.
