Full program notes
The four movements of the three Bach Violin Sonatas (BWV 1001, 1003, 1005) can be interpreted as self-contained worlds. Following the Italian sonata da chiesa structure, there is more to be explored, as each movement may serve as a seed for music from later eras to grow into.
Imagine the first movement transitions smoothly into a set of Scriabin Preludes, and the next movement extends into Brazilian-inspired variations by Sérgio Assad. Aside from these two composers, the program can also feature works by George Crumb, Anton Diabelli, Richard Wagner, Pēteris Vasks, and Elliott Carter. In this way, the evening’s music becomes less of a linear program and more of a dynamic form, where Bach serves as the tree where the rest of the music blossoms.
As for the violin sonata (transcribed on classical guitar), it is up to you to decide which one you want to hear! I will then program the music in between each movement.
Historical context
This program combines my knowledge and expertise as a historically informed performer, transforming them into a modern interpretation. While the performance of Bach will stay faithful to the historical practices of eighteenth-century German music, the expansion of each movement through juxtaposition of music by later composers is my artistic and creative expression.
