It sits atop a hill, overlooking so much of our great city. It’s often regarded as among the foremost of America’s architectural treasures. It was started during Teddy’s presidency and finished during H.W.’s. It’s the second largest church-building in the US. It is, of course, the National Cathedral. And, on May 19th - a Sunday, the Churchliest of days - we enter its sacred enormity for a Groupmuse Night Out!
The Cathedral Choral Society, founded in 1941 as a way to build community solidarity and joy during that terrifying time, opens its doors to us for its season finale.
In a performance that deeply resonates with its founding moment, the Choral Society has prepared Give Us Peace, a program of two of the most sublime choral works of the 20th Century:
Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, a choral work somehow both punchy and grand - and always so melodious. It’s also short and sweet - clocking in under 25 minutes.
R. V. Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem - his shattering and glorious plea for peace written in 1936 - drawing on the Bible, Walt Whitman, and the mounting international crisis his homeland England was facing at the time.
These are not those days. But they are days nonetheless, and the drums of war are once again growing louder. We’re so grateful that the Choral Society has given us this opportunity for deep reflection.
We’ve got a real cheap stack of tickets to so timely and sacred a celebration of sound in so splendid a place — only $15! But supplies are limited, so if you want to join, please do!
