Some context for our next Night Out:
As warlords go, Frederick The Great, who reigned as King of Prussia (current day Germany) was about as good as they come. Yes, he was a brutal master of violence - notching innumerable long-odds military victories and establishing Prussia as a leading and fearsome force on the continent - but he was also a great supporter of enlightenment values, the arts, and a reformist emancipation. He’s also known to history as arguably his millennium's most powerful LGBT icon -- in his own words "Fortune has it in for me; she is a woman, and I am not that way inclined.”
In 1747, he met J.S. Bach and bestowed upon him a musical theme and challenged him to write a fugue upon it. The eventually result was Bach’s Musical Offering, a transformational and sublime creation that will outlast Kings, states, and armies.
And Artek, one of NYC’s great early music ensembles, is ready with the whole thing. And - you may have guessed - they’ve gifted us a stack of cheap tickets so that we may join for a Groupmuse Night Out!
$20 for yours, we’ll gather in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and we will have such a transcendent Night Out.
