France and Russia have long had a special relationship. Often allies in warfare, a strange and beautiful cultural bond has also intertwined the fates of these nations and peoples. To wit: French was the language of the Russian Aristocracy; Stravinsky - arguably Russia’s most influential composer - made his home in France; and, more recently, The "needing-no-introduction" San Francisco Symphony announced they’ve got an upcoming evening featuring masterpieces of both French and Russian origin! And what’s best of all: They want us to join for a Night Out!

We’ll start with Maurice Ravel’s early gem, his Pavane pour une infant défunte. It’ll be followed by his rousing, jazzy, explosive Piano Concerto in G Major, with the great Louis Lortie on the keys.

The second half of the concert will by the eternally great and lush and colorful Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade - his symphonic rendition of Arabian Nights. It’s one of the most beloved pieces the whole orchestral rep.

The band will be led by Simone Young - an Australian conductor and one of the most celebrated women to ever wield the baton.
