Our generous and beloved friends at the Celebrity Series have seriously made with some very last minute goods — and while I’m sure a lot of you already have plans for this Saturday Night, I’ve some really splendid news for the rest of you:
The Hagen Quartet, prize-winning, internationally renowned, and almost 40 years young, is coming though with something of a motherlode:
The program starts with one of Franz Schubert’s last string quartets, his Rosamunde, a piece that shimmers and dances with the soft sadness that has endeared Schubert to all of Eternity.
It’s followed by Anton Webern’s foundational work of modernism, his Five Movements for String Quartet, Opus 5
The finale is as grand as it gets: L.V. Beethoven’s late masterwork, his op. 131, often referred to as the single greatest piece of chamber music ever written. His partner-on-the-program Schubert himself said of the masterwork "After this, what is left for us to write?” Schubert ended up coming forth with some darned good answers to the question, but that just goes to show how heavy-duty Beethoven’s creation truly is.
Oh, also, it’s in the legendary Jordan Hall — one of the most acoustically sublime spots on Earth. Welcome to your Saturday Night.
Tickets typically average $60, but we’ve got a stack for $20! We have to close up the sales on Thursday at noon though -- so that leaves you just over 24 hours to make good on this sweet deal, so boogie!
And have a Great Night Out!
