Our rescheduled Night Out at the Museum!
The Smithsonian is so much more than a collection of world-class museums. It’s a testament to our collective belief that culture, the life of the mind, and the life of the spirit need to be preserved, elevated, and amplified. It’s also, you may be surprised to learn, home to one of the finest concert series this Great City knows. And guess what: they want to bring us along for a Groupmuse Night Out!
Through the indefatigable work of Smithsonian Associates, a department devoted to continuous education in its many forms, some of the best performers in the world come through the fabled halls of the Natural History Museum on the regular — foremost among them being The Emerson String Quartet, who have been coming through every year for decades.
On the off-chance that the Emerson needs any introduction at all, suffice to say, they’re by common consent one of, if not the, greatest string quartet of this generation.
And boy have they got an evening of heavy hitters lined up: we start with Lyric for Strings by George Walker, the first African American to win the Pulitzer for music. It’s followed by Shostakovich and his wrenching and epochal 8th String Quartet — one of his most astonishing works. The finale is Beethoven’s op. 59/1, a piece that represents the very birth of the Romantic String Quartet.
Such a feast of sound and the sublime will typically run $60 — but it’s Groupmuse and Smithsonian Associates is SERIOUSLY good people, so we’ve got a stack for a mere $20! But it’s limited, so grab yours, bring your loved ones with this epic, last minute Christmas present (if that is your way), and have an unbelievable Night Out at the Museum!
