The opening four notes of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony are indelibly etched into the souls of all who pass through our modern world - but it was actually Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony - his Eroica - that was the true watershed moment in the life of the man, Classical Music, and, arguably, Western Culture. It represented a definitive break from the Enlightened Formalism of the classical era, and ripped straight into the tempestuous iconoclasm of the Romantic.
The longest major symphony written up until that time, Beethoven’s 3rd was originally dedicated to Napoleon, believed by Ludwig Van to be a great liberator — a destroyer of structures that stifle human life and potential. When Napoleon declared himself Emperor, Beethoven scratched out the first title and re-dubbed it the Eroica - the “Heroic”. The world would never be the same.
Well. We’re so very pleased to get the chance to share this towering, teetering masterpiece with you, our wonderful DMV community, thanks all to the brilliant New Orchestra of Washington (NOW).
We’ll gather in the beautiful Church of the Epiphany, by Lafayette Square, and start with the glorious and abundant Piano Concerto No. 1 by Chopin - featuring virtuoso soloist Ryo Yanagitani. It’s an embodiment of the fully-blown Romantic - the world Beethoven had done so much to create a generation earlier.
The second half of the program is the fabled Eroica. May we carry it with us.
Tickets typically run $30, but we’ve got a Groupmuse-exclusive stack for just $15! But it won’t last, so get on it!
And have a great Night Out!
