Classical music, whatever the implications of that problematic title, is truly a living art form. Sgt. Pepper’s by the Beatles will forever be the same as it was when it came out in ’67, but these two and three hundred year old pieces we share continue to evolve before our eyes as new generations of musician, motivated by new ideas, conjure these ancient impulses before us. This art can’t live in a museum — it needs to breath.
The virtuoso players of Les Delices truly manifest this. They’re baroque instrumentalists, playing instruments designed half a millennium ago, and they play age-old masterworks — but they also play 20th century popular standards, all baroque’d up, to accentuate the conversation between past and present that all classical music performance already is.
And, thanks to our friends at the 5 Borough Music Festival, we get to join them for a Night Out!
This Saturday evening, we gather at the beautiful Old First Reformed Church in Park Slope to hear this dazzling trio play some gems of old, coupled with Nina Simone, Stephen Sondheim, Aretha Franklin as you’ve never heard them — on instruments that predate this country.
Tickets are typically $30, but we’ve got a Groupmuse-exclusive stack for a mere $15! But supplies are tight, so move now if you want in!
And have a great Night Out!
