Per unit human, pieces written for piano four-hands are remarkably musically dense. If you take the four string players of a string quartet, given that each instrument has 4 strings, the most notes they can possibly play at once is 16. With only two 10-fingered people at a single piano, however, they can make 20 notes sing at the same instant. Of course, more notes is by no means necessarily good, and the whole exercise of measuring "musical density per unit human" is confusing, absurd, and bizarre, but here we are!

Given all that, maybe it makes sense that so many great composers wrote piano-four hand versions of their most favored masterworks. And, this coming Sunday, with the absolutely brilliant piano duo Stephanie & Saar, we're celebrating some highlights with an afternoon Night Out!

It'll be Igor Stravinsky's own four-hands arrangement of his world-changing Rite of Spring. Then we'll have the even more revolutionary masterwork, Beethoven's Große Fuge, originally a late string quartet but arranged for 20 digits by Ludwig himself, from a hundred years before, which Stravinsky himself called "an absolutely contemporary piece of music that will be contemporary forever."

We'll finish with Schubert's Fantasia in F Minor, unique on the program because it was originally written for piano-4 hands. And that's because Schubert wrote his music for living room parties, because he was Groupmuse For Life. Moreover, it's one of the most beautiful, sad, and spellbinding works ever known.

Our host for the show is the effortlessly rad pioneers of Classical Music Cool - (le) Poisson Rouge, a beautiful and edgy venue/bar in the village which has, for over a decade, been doing the hard and familiar work of making classical music hip -- and they've made a resounding success of it. If you've never been to LPR, you're in for such a treat.

We've got a stack of table seats at a discount -- only $15 to get in! But with table seats, everyone will need to buy at least two drink or food items, so I guess you'll have to enjoy yourself...

Quantities are limited and it's first-come-first-served, so grab yours and we'll see you there!
