Way out in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, there is an island civilization almost 8,000 years in the making. In those 8 millennia, Malta has been occupied by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French, and the British -- each of which left its indelible mark.
Just this year, Malta's capital Valetta has been named the 2018 European Capital of Culture. And, in celebration, the Malta Philharmonic is coming to the unbelievably gorgeous venue The Strathmore to share with the DMV the sounds of its fascinating homeland. And what's best of all: They want us to join for a very special Groupmuse Night Out.
The program starts with a tone poem by 20th Century Maltese composer Joseph Vella entitled Rebbieħa. It's followed by Travel Notebook for Piano and Orchestra, composed by Maltese-American contemporary composer Alexey Shor.
The program ends with a warhorse of warhorses: The 5th Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich -- a towering monument to expression, depth, and emotion that must be witnessed to be believed.
Typically, these tickets'll run ya $75, but the Malta Philharmonic is good people -- so they've given our community a stack for only $20 -- over 70% off! But it's limited, so boogie if you want in!
