Last season, we had the great honor and pleasure of introducing our community to the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, a true cultural jewel of this great city, and the brain child of Benjamin Zander — one of the world’s great evangelists for classical music. Our crowd loved the BPO, and thankfully, they loved us back — so they’re inviting the community to join for their opening Night Out on October 18th! So it’s back to the GLORIOUS and Hogwartsian Sanders Theater at Harvard we go!
The centerpiece of the program is Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, a lush and melodious but also muscular and astonishing exploration of the full possibilities of that much beloved instrument. Boston’s own virtuoso cellist Jonah Ellsworth (who, we blush to declare, has made a living room groupmuse appearance or two in his day) will lead the band for this titanic masterwork.
It'll be followed by the 1st Symphony by Johannes Brahms — a piece that many believe was his first legitimate claim to the torch of Romanticism he inherited from Beethoven.
The program opens with the rollicking and irrepressible overture to Mikhail Glinka’s opera Ruslan and Lyudmila.
As this concert is the season’s first installment of the BPO’s Discovery Series, Benjamin Zander will be our guide to the music throughout the performance, with a charisma and insight that you can only find in Benjamin Zander.
Tickets to such a feast of sound and electricity typically average $50, but because it's Groupmuse after all, we've got a stack for a mere $20 -- more than half off! But they probably won't last, so make haste if you want in!
