The summer is winding down, which means the Arts Season is winding up. And that means we’re making plans for our next LA Massivemuse on October 6th and it’s a heavy hitter:
Dmitri Shostakovich was writing music for a world coming apart a the seams. He lived in perpetual fear that a sharp knock at the door would be Joseph Stalin’s State coming to take his life away. The power of that fear and his resolve to endure imbue his music with a two-sidedness - of terror and of beauty - that have ensured it a place in the halls of history, to be forever celebrated as a peak expression of human genius.
Nowhere is this genius expressed more succinctly and completely than in his 8th String Quartet. And so we Massivemuse. While most of us don’t fear the knock on our own door, so many of the forces that made Shosti’s world a living nightmare seem to be stirring in our own - so it seems an important moment to remember where we’ve been to steel our resolve as we move forward into our unknown age.
In collaboration with Felt In Four Productions, we’ve put together an ensemble of some of the top talent this city has to offer to collectively meditate on Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet.
But that’s just the first half. For the second half, we’re joined by the singular Stereo Hideout — a brilliant fusion artist who blends Brahms and Radiohead, Mendelssohn and Bob Dylan, Beethoven and Coldplay and takes his creations to concert halls around the country — and he’s prepared a remixed Shosti 8 that we’ll share this coming evening.
The evening is BYOB, it’s going down at the beautiful Monk Space right in Central LA, tickets are $20, and we can’t wait to see you there.
What's the music?
