NOTE: Though called a Groupmuse Night Out, this concert is in the afternoon. It's a branding thing!
Antonín Dvořák is a singular figure in the history of classical music. Born to a butcher in the Bohemian heartland almost almost 180 years ago, he came of age under the thumb of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With his bottomless musical genius and equally bottomless love for his homeland, he created a vast body of music that represented a true synthesis of the Czech folk music of his youth and the intricately structured classical music of the concert hall, and in so doing, he brought the music of his Bohemia to stages and into homes around the world, forwarding the Czech struggle for independence in the most melodious way imaginable. Along the way, he spent a few years here in New York, helping a rising world power build its own, authentically American classical music.
The Dvořák American Heritage Association (DAHA) thankfully exists to honor that legacy, and, lucky for us, they've invited us along to their season opening for a Groupmuse Night Out at the breathtakingly gorgeous Bohemian National Hall!
And for the occasion, they've enlisted the world-renowned Martinů Quartet, now in their 5th decade, all the way from the Czech Repulic, to dive deep into an evening of Dvořák's chamber work masterpieces:
The Terzetto in C Major Opus 74
The String Quartet No. 12 in F Major Opus 96, the “American” -- written during his years in America and born of the African American and American Indian influences he absorbed in his time here.
The String Quartet No. 14 in A-Flat Major Opus 105
Tickets are the door at $30, but because it's Groupmuse and DAHA is seriously good people, we've got a stack for only $15 -- fully 50% off! But supplies are finite, so move if you want to join!
And have a great Night (or Afternoon...) Out!
