When a composer has a late flowering of genius in the end of their life, it's sometimes known as a "late summer" -- and indeed a great many of the most profound masterworks in the history of this music are the flowers of late summers.
And so, on September 23rd, the very first full day of Fall, it seems fitting that for our first Groupmuse Night Out of the Season we celebrate a couple of late summers, brought to us by our friends, the inimitable Boston Artists Ensemble.
We'll gather in St. Paul's Church in Brookline for a performance first of Mozart's String Trio in E Flat -- written in the last years of the great man's life, it's a 45 minute exploration of every aspect of Wolfgang's genius, uncommonly poignant and profound, even by Mozart's singular standard. And all for just three string instruments, it's a testament to economy of sound.
It'll be followed by Leos Janacek's howlingly great string quartet "Intimate Letters", also an end-of-life miracle. Inspired by his obsession with a much younger woman, Janacek takes the ancient folkish rawness of Moravian music and turns it into a 20th century statement -- a shattering backdrop to a lost generation.
An evening of such treasure and depth is typically $30, but because the BAE loves it's 'musers, we've got a stack for you for only $15 -- fully half off. But the supply is limited so if you want to join, make haste!
And have a great Night (or rather, Afternoon) Out!
