We here at Groupmuse often talk about how we seek to satiate a need that organized religion religion has for millennia had almost exclusive claim to: the need to congregate and commune over an experience of wordless but undeniable power, to reconnect us to the mystery that is at the center of all of us. Well, our friends at GatherNYC have taken the churchly character and depth of collective listening to even more explicit heights and, this week, they want us to join for a Sunday Morning Out! *
In their own words: "Held every Sunday morning in downtown Manhattan, GatherNYC evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service, but the religion here is music, and all are welcome."
This week, we'll celebrate with renowned cellist Mike Block -- a cello player, singer and composer who is a Grammy Award-winning member of the Silk Road Ensemble. Block's solo show features a mixture of original compositions and songs, arrangements of traditional folk music, and classical selections that draw inspiration from his diverse collaborations with artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Mark O’Connor, Indian tabla player Sandeep Das, and pop stars such as will.i.am, Stevie Wonder, and Bon Iver.
The gathering is held at the legendarily cool Subculture in Greenwich Village, and tickets come with free coffee, delicious pastries, and the humbling power of this thing we call music.
Doors are at 10am, concert starts at 10.30 and it'll last an hour.
We've got a limited stack for $15, so if you want to join, please do!
*Because of a healthy dollop of branding short-sightedness, this Morning Out will sometimes be referred to on the site as a Night Out. Do forgive us!
