It was only in April that we had our first LA Massivemuse - and a sold-out smash it was. So, bowing to market demand, we've got another one on the books, and what a Massive it'll be.
Palaver Strings, a conductor-less, cooperatively-run string orchestra of activist-musicians who bring this great art to at-risk youth, struggling mothers, hospital patients, LGBTQ seniors, and more, embody exactly what classical music in the 21st century needs to be. And, lucky for us, they're coming through Los Angeles and they're down to Massive.
redCola Music -- the badass Venice-based sound-design studio who's work you've heard in Black Panther, Dunkirk, Coco and more -- is opening their doors to us for a BYOB sound-studio bash, with a program Palaver Strings calls A Voice in the Crowd. In their own words:
"A Voice in the Crowd features the remarkable and truly personal voice of composer Ian Gottlieb. His concerto grosso, Even, written for Palaver Strings in its first year as an ensemble, expands the boundaries of the string orchestra medium, interweaving unity and individuality in a multitudinous fabric of divergent yet complementary solo lines. Even, alongside the raucous Christmas Concerto by Arcangelo Corelli and Heinrich Biber's 350 year old but electrifying and vivid depiction of a battle in Battalia à 10, explore thecrelationships between the individual and the group, the self and the other. From moments of unity, peace, tenderness, and joy, to those of tension, chaos, and conflict.
A Voice in the Crowd is a musical exploration of our personal need to be heard and have a voice, and our struggle to balance that in the cacophonous world we live in."
Tickets are $20 and we'll see you there!
What's the music?
CORELLI Christmas Concerto
BIBER Battalia à 10
GOTTLIEB Even
In June, Palaver will embark on its first west coast tour, presenting concerts and educational workshops in Venice, Santa Clarita, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Carson. Our tour program, A Voice in the Crowd, explores the relationship between the individual and the group, the “self” and the other. At the center of the program is Even, a concerto grosso by Los Angeles composer Ian Gottlieb, who wrote it specifically for Palaver in its first year as an ensemble. Even juxtaposes unity and individuality, mirroring Palaver’s creative process as a conductorless ensemble. Alongside Corelli's joyous Christmas Concerto and Biber’s vivid depiction of war in Battalia à 10, this program explores our struggle to make our voices heard in a chaotic world.
