Much of the Art Song repertoire explores feelings of love and joy, as these passionate emotions lend themselves to exquisite poetic and musical settings by artists from the Romantic era and beyond. For my first Groupmuse, however, I chose to explore the opposite -- feelings that we all experience in times of adversity: anxiety, melancholie, and fear, since they seem to rise to the surface with increasing frequency during these unstable times. The emotional journey begins with Michael Djupstrom's Oars in Water, then detours to the sentimental world of Francis Poulenc. Alban Berg's brooding Op. 2 songs begin the second half of the program, which ends with Emily Dickinson's sensitive words, set to music by Aaron Copland. I find incredible solace in these intimate songs, and I wish to share them with you. This concert will feature NY-based guest artist Elisa Sutherland, mezzo-soprano.
