Bah bah bah buuuuuuum, bah bah bah buuuuuuuum - with those eight nonsense syllables and nothing else, most of you probably already know what I'm talking about. It's the opening of Beethoven's epochal 5th symphony and probably the most famous moment of music in the history of the West. But the thing is, it's loud and it's big and it just doesn't fit in a living room so for all of thousands of pieces of classical music that Groupmuse has presented, we've never once gotten the chance to share this War Horse of War Horses with our crowd.
Well. Thanks to our wonderful friends at the Oakland Symphony, we've gotten that chance with a big, fat Groupmuse Night Out. Their opening night is October 20th and we couldn't be more grateful that they're bringing us along.
If you've never heard the 5th symphony in its full enormity, you've got to be there. That famous four not bah bah bah buuuum is obsessively drilled in, wound around, stacked on stacks of itself, and powers the whole manic masterpiece until the brilliant and exuberant finale breaks through like the sunshine.
And that'll be just the first half! The second half will feature Shostakovich's 15th symphony - a piece that could hardly be more different than the first and was the final symphonic work of a super genius who'd fully mastered the symphony in the 20th century just as Beethoven had in the 19th Century.
Tickets are on average $50 at the door, but because it's Groupmuse and fortune smiles upon us, you can be part of this monumental opening night for $20.
