In the last years of his life, J.S. Bach, undoubtedly one of the deepest and most powerful minds that has ever been, undertook a massive and mystical project: The Art of the Fugue. Starting with a single 12 note musical theme, he explored all conceivable dimensions that the theme suggested over the course of 14 movements, probing every recess of his inner world, and bringing the fugue - a form characterized by complex, interweaving musical lines and which he had mastered a thousand times before like no one ever has - to unimaginable heights and depths.
He died before he could finish it, and perhaps because of that, he never specified instruments for which it was written, which grants ambitious ensembles of many shapes and sizes free range to present this masterwork in ever more ways.
So, (le) poisson rouge, the utterly singular and unspeakably cool classical music bar in Lower Manhattan that needs no introduction is welcoming us for yet another Groupmuse Night Out. And this time it'll be for a performance of Bach's late masterwork, presented for piano four-hands - a form in which this epic masterpiece is almost never seen or heard.
Four-hands duo Stephanie & Saar, who just recently made the first full recording of the Art of Fugue for piano four hands that's ever been made, are treating us to the experience.
It'll be a Sunday evening in a different universe.
And our wonderful brothers-in-arms at LPR have given us a limited stack of tickets for $15* (and $10 for supermusers), but, it is indeed limited, so hustle!
——
*Note: The tickets will be for both standing room and spots at a cabaret table. Spots at a cabaret table are more limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Also, table spot come with a required two drink minimum, but the bar at LPR is absolutely epic. It's the size of the Nevada.
**Another Note: The doors to the show will be at 4pm, and the music will start at 5pm.
