🎷 A string quartet meets the expressive, boundary-crossing sound of the saxophone. The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society welcomes the acclaimed Verona Quartet and visionary saxophonist-composer Steven Banks for an adventurous program that moves between classical tradition, contemporary storytelling, and richly varied musical worlds. The evening features a world premiere: Banks and the quartet perform Mania Amour, a new work by composer Nabors, commissioned by PCMS. Also on the program are Debussy’s evocative Syrinx, Mozart’s elegant Oboe Quartet reimagined for this ensemble, and three Philadelphia premieres—including Banks’s own Reflections and Exaltations, Reena Esmail’s Magan Rehna, and Christopher Theofanidis’s Visions of the Hereafter. Expect everything from intimate, atmospheric textures to bold, exuberant interplay, with the saxophone adding a whole new dimension to the sound of chamber music.
Make an evening of it with a pre-concert talk by Peter Schoenbach at 6:30 PM in Comcast Circle, offering a chance to get some context and insight before the performance begins at 7:30. Join the Verona Quartet and Steven Banks Wednesday, December 9 at the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for a concert full of discovery and musical surprises! 🎶✨
