Where does this music come from?

Tango's story runs from the brothels of 1880s Buenos Aires to concert halls worldwide, and tonight's program traces that arc.

Born in the working-class port districts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, tango blended African candombe rhythms, Cuban habanera, and European immigrant music. Albéniz's Tango (1890) predates the Argentine form and is really a Spanish habanera-style piece, though its sultry rhythm made it a popular cousin to the genre. Carlos Gardel, the golden-voiced icon of the 1930s, brought tango to the world stage; Por una cabeza (1935), written for film, uses a racehorse's narrow loss as a metaphor for a gambler's weakness for love. Astor Piazzolla later revolutionized the form with his nuevo tango, fusing it with jazz and classical harmony. His Milonga, a nod to tango's lighter, older cousin, and the haunting Oblivion (1982), written for Marco Bellocchio's film Enrico IV, show his lyrical side. Blue Tango (1951) is Leroy Anderson's orchestral pop hit, which became the first instrumental to top the Billboard charts.

After intermission, Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango (1986) tells the genre's story in four movements: the raucous Bordel 1900, where tango was born as music for flute and guitar in the brothels of Buenos Aires; the more intimate, nostalgic Café 1930; the restless, modern Nightclub 1960, when Piazzolla's own experiments began to alter the form; and Concert d'aujourd'hui, a nod to tango's arrival in the concert hall. Today's arrangements are by Daniel Reyes Llinás.
