Welcome! I’m so excited to host pianist and composer Owen Dodds for an evening of music.
Owen is a wonderful pianist, composer, and chamber musician currently pursuing his DMA at Stony Brook University, where he studies piano with Gilbert Kalish and composition with Perry Goldstein. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Steinway Hall, and with orchestras including the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, and his musical life spans everything from classical solo and chamber music to composition and modern folk. You can learn more about him here: https://www.owendodds.com
A small house note: this is a shoes-free home, so please plan to leave your shoes at the door (fun socks encouraged!).
Looking forward to sharing a beautiful evening of music together!
What's the music?
Program:
Beethoven - Bagatelle No. 1, Op. 126
Berio - Brin
Chopin - Nocturne in C Sharp Minor, Op. 27
Owen Dodds - Piano Sonata: American Dreams
Intermission
Beethoven - Piano Sonata Op. 111
Where does this music come from?
Beethoven’s late style contains sonic and formal inventions that pave the way for centuries of music. Using Beethoven’s late piano works as a point of departure into romanticism and modernity, perhaps we can appreciate the timelessness of this music in a new way.
I’ll begin with a collage of short works from Beethoven’s Op. 126 Bagatelles, Berio’s Encores, alongside one of my favorite Chopin Nocturnes, followed by my own piano sonata and concluding with Beethoven’s final piano sonata Op 111.
