This program brings together two monumental works from J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites with two original pieces for solo cello by Tamar Sagiv.

The evening opens with Bach’s Suite No. 1 in G Major, one of the most beloved works ever written for the cello—clear, intimate, and full of dance-like warmth. The program then moves into Tamar’s own music, where the cello becomes a deeply personal voice: singing, grieving, remembering, and searching.

At the center of the program is a dialogue between past and present. Bach’s music, written over 300 years ago, still feels immediate and human; Tamar’s own works continue that lineage through a contemporary lens, blending classical tradition, improvisation, and storytelling.

The program concludes with Bach’s Suite No. 6 in D Major, the most expansive and radiant of the cello suites. Originally written for a five-string instrument, it pushes the cello toward its highest, most luminous register—ending the evening with a sense of openness, virtuosity, and light.

What's the music?

Cellist and composer Tamar Sagiv performs J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites No. 1 and No. 6, paired with original works from her debut album on Sono Luminus — named Best Album of the Week by NPR. Her music blends the elegance of Bach with her own contemporary voice.
