What's the music?
Drums from the Diaspora
The drum, and the drummer, have long been the lifeblood of the African Diaspora. Few instruments embody that legacy more completely than the drum set itself.
Throughout the twentieth century, Black American musicians transformed a collection of percussion instruments into one of the most influential instruments in modern music. From jazz and blues to funk, hip-hop, and beyond, the drum set has driven the sound, spirit, and innovation of American music for generations.
This Juneteenth, join us for a high-energy celebration of that legacy. Featuring not one, but two of New York City's most exciting young drummers, Drums from the Diaspora highlights the artistry, creativity, and rhythmic power of the drum set through music written by drummer-composers across the decades - including original works by members of the band.
Expect groove, virtuosity, and plenty of surprises as we honor the enduring influence of the African Diaspora through the musicians who keep the beat moving forward. This is a celebration you won't want to miss!
Quinton Cain - drum set, bandleader
Kabelo Mokhatla - drum set
Conway Campbell - bass
Stephane Clement - trumpet
