Theon F. (he/him)

The Musician: Syl DuBenion is a black American musician, born and raised in Buffalo, NY. Syl holds a love for water / art / community, embodying and sharing their universe of imagination, an infinity for color, and relentless optimism via various modes of creativity and empathy. In addition to music, Syl is also writer and comedic performer.

Syl’s artistic accolades include touring with Solange Knowles, being a member of the New York avant-garde collective Standing on the Corner, script writing for PBS, and performing all over the world, from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, France.

Syl holds a Bachelor’s from the Berklee College of Music in jazz compositon + film scoring, a Master’s in jazz studies from NYU Steinhardt, and has studied improv and sketch writing at the Upright Citizens Brigade on scholarship. Currently living in Manhattan, Syl continues to expand their universe of creativity ad infinitum.

The Venue: Cordelia is a café by day and a wine bar by night, but at heart it’s the neighborhood’s living room—a cozy, communal space made for lingering, listening, and experiencing music together.

What's the music?

Syl DuBenion Saxophone

Where does this music come from?

Syl's music is a blend of popular sensitivities, the blues, and improvisation. While his lyrics harp on reminiscence and folk-like narration, my harmonies are stellar, grounded by intimate, cordial melodies. Whether it's from his saxophone or voice, his goal is sincerity.

Some of his biggest influences include Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Anthony Braxton, Whitney Houston, the Strokes, Thelonius Monk, Frank Ocean, Ella Fitzgerald, Prince, Debbie Allen, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Donald Glover, and Beyoncé.
