Soprano Noelle Barbera collaborates with pianist Mara Waldman for a thoughtfully curated recital of art songs that explores love in all its complexity—its exhilaration, tenderness, heartbreak, and loss. Sung in five languages—French, Italian, German, English, and Russian—the recital juxtaposes songs that revel in love’s most joyful, romantic moments with those that reflect longing, betrayal, and love gone wrong. Throughout the program, Noelle invites the audience more deeply into each piece by translating key phrases and highlighting the linguistic, cultural, and musical nuances that shape how love is expressed in different traditions.

Where does this music come from?

Sung in five languages—French, Italian, German, English, and Russian—the recital juxtaposes songs that revel in love’s most joyful, romantic moments with those that reflect longing, betrayal, and love gone wrong. From the lyric intimacy of the German Lied to the sensual color of French mélodie, the passionate sweep of Italian song, and the expressive depth of Russian romance, each work offers a distinct cultural perspective on the universal experience of love.

Throughout the program, Noelle invites the audience more deeply into each piece by translating key phrases and highlighting the linguistic, cultural, and musical nuances that shape how love is expressed in different traditions.
