Host

We're so excited to welcome Mara Kaye and the Marlonius Jazz Orchestra for an evening of big sounds and so much ecstatic joy on a beautiful October evening in Mar Vista as we remember what a joy it is to live where we do, when we do.

We'll see you there!

Doors are at 5pm, music is at 6 🙌

What's the music?

Mara Kaye will sing the music of Billie Holiday! These are brand new, soulful arrangements by Marlon Martinez, scored specially for Mara's bluesy, captivating voice and the Mini-Marlonius Jazz Orchestra (12 players).

Where does this music come from?

Billie Holiday (1915-1959) aka "Lady Day" popularized blues, jazz and Tin Pan Alley songs written during her lifetime, many of those songs, such as "Strange Fruit," "Lover Man" and "Blue Moon" are now famous because of her. She was the first African-American singer to perform live with an all-white band. She revolutionized jazz singing with her forward-thinking approach to singing the blues and interpreting lyrics. She is a black, and queer icon who remained strong in the face of racial discrimination, segregation, and hate crimes against her during Jim Crow America
