Program
Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969) String Quartet No. 4 (1951)
Grażyna Bacewicz was born into a musical family in Poland. Bacewicz became an extraordinary professional violinist and prolific award-winning composer. Following the German occupation in WWII, Bacewicz was part of the Underground Union of Musicians. Commissioned by the Underground Union, Bacewicz’s Fourth Quartet was an immediate success. It won first prize at the International Composers’ Competition in Liège and the Polish National Prize in 1952.

Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918) String Quartet in G minor, Op.10 (1893)
Claude Debussy was a French composer and is seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of his time. Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at age ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of his conservative professors. He completed his String Quartet in G minor in 1893 when he was 31. It is his only string quartet.

What's the music?

Quartet Aido String Quartet

Bacewicz String Quartet No. 4
and
Debussy Quartet in G minor
Debussy's only string quartet is one of the most popular and well regarded quartets in the literature! He constructs the entire work around one rhythmic, powerful theme, a construction which is mirrored in Bacewicz's fourth quartet. Bacewicz is an infrequently played Polish female composer, and this quartet, like Debussy's, is rhythmic, propulsive, and deeply melodic. We can't wait to present these two works in conversation with each other!
