I am excited to host an artist who has developed an all Maurice Ravel program for the piano, giving an historic look at his life and the beautiful music it created. We will hear his most famous "Pavane pour one infante defunte"(death of a princess) and other selections. The artist, Kessa Mefford, is deeply passionate about Ravel so the evening will be about enjoying the music with a little understanding around it. In addition to the company of new people who enjoy the same with time for chat and of course wine and cheese!
What's the music?
I am, first and foremost, a Ravel specialist. I perform everything he wrote for piano — solo, chamber, art song, and concerto. With his ear for harmony, his hunger for color, and his painstaking craft, his music speaks to me in a way no other composer does. Ravel was unique in that he believed his music already existed and that his role was only to discover it. When I play, I feel connected to him across decades — him searching for the perfect chord as I search for the perfect sound. In performance, I invite the audience to search with us, discovering together the subtle tensions and quiet brilliance that define his music.
In this all-Ravel program, we will be taking a historical journey through Ravel’s life through the lens of his dance music. Every single dance form that he wrote for solo piano will be featured this evening.
