No longer bounded by space and borders, and at the dawn of an entirely new era for Groupmuse, we’re gratefully afforded the chance to work and share with all of the friends who made Groupmuse what it is throughout the years of this journey. Though our paths have led us all to different places, this virtual moment is something of a grand reunion, when we can all be together again and collectively imagine and rebuild the practice of this art form into an unknown future.
And so, for this Saturday’s Massivemuse, we’ve got two of the oldest and most venerable Groupmuse icons: Boston-born cellist Tony Rymer and French-Malagasi pianist Yannick Rafalimanana. Rafalimanana played the first groupmuse there ever was — back in January of 2013 (as well as countless others since then and all over the country), and Tony Rymer held it down for innumerable string quartets in those first wild years in Boston. Now, over 7 years later, they’re roommates in Berlin and they’re ready to beam back across the pond.
It should also be noted that they’re both prize-winning musicians of the highest calibre - with Rymer taking first at both the Washington International Competition and the Sphinx Competition, and they’re preparing for us an evening of The Goods… Ludwig Van’s Goods:
Two of Beethoven’s celestial cello sonatas are on the beating heart of the program - no. 4 op. 102/1 and arguably the crown jewel of the entire cello sonata rep - his 3rd, op. 69. And, masters of programming that Yannick and Tony are, these hefty mammoth masterworks are thoughtfully balanced by a Fauré Romance to open the first half and a Tchaikovsky waltz to open the second.
After the feast, we’ll meet in the after-Zoom for a Q&A to dream about the New Age and reminisce about the old times.
Can’t wait to see you there!
