Some classical music works have such transcendental power that they’re lifted out of the orbit of the classical music world, find a place in the mainstream cultural experience, and forever become part of our collective memory. Bach’s 1st Cello Suite is as potent an example of that as there’s ever been - and an economical one too: all of that depth, beauty, and mystical insight delivered on just four strings by a lone human. And that, my friends, makes it a perfect masterwork for Times of Quarantine.
So, in partnership with our forever-friends, The Aspect Chamber Music Series, we’re bringing through one of the best cellists in the world to unleash this ever-familiar yet somehow-still-unknowable piece of Genius for this Saturday’s Livestream Massivemuse.
Last year, Zlatomir Fung won first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition - arguably the most prestigious of all international competitions - becoming the first U.S. cellist in more than 30 years to take home the Gold. On top of that, he’s only 20 years old - so we have many more years of his insight, his dazzling virtuosity, and his big-hearted sensitivity to look forward to.
He opens with Bach’s First Cello Suite, and then he’s joined by his partner-in-isolation, the terrific violinist I-Jung Huang, for the eternally beloved showpiece, the Handel/Halvorsen Passacaglia.
After the intermission, it’s back to solo cello with Max Reger’s lush and late romantic answer to Bach’s offering, his Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello, also in G Major.
The finale of the program is Zlatomir’s own original Bulgarian Fragments, written for violin and cello and drawing on the Bulgarian roots of our evening’s hero.
As ever, we’ll start with a Zoom hang at 7.30pm Eastern Daylight Time, and then head to the livestream for an 8pm EDT curtain, and then we’ll meet back in the Zoom afterward for a soulful Q&A with our great artist.
Can’t wait to see you there!
