Junwen is originally from mainland China and came to the United States in 2013 for his studies, completing his academic journey at the Peabody Institute in May 2024, where he worked closely with the concert pianist Richard Goode. Since then, he has performed approximately 35 concerts across the U.S. and China. This fall, he had the pleasure of performing several Groupmuse concerts in Philadelphia, New York, and San Diego, and was deeply grateful for those experiences—three of which reached full capacity with waitlists. Returning to this intimate concert setting has been especially meaningful, echoing the salon traditions that first shaped classical music culture, and it’s inspiring to see how Groupmuse continues to foster such close and engaged musical communities today.

Where does this music come from?

This program traces more than a century of American musical life and its many intersecting voices. Amy Beach, one of the first major American women composers, brings late Romantic lyricism and character to Les Rêves de Colombine, while Florence Price and William Grant Still, two pioneering Black American composers, draw upon spirituals, blues, and distinctly American musical traditions. The world of Broadway enters through Stephen Hough’s imaginative reworkings of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Earl Wild’s dazzling virtuoso transformations of Gershwin songs. Philip Glass represents the influential American minimalist tradition, before the program looks across the Pacific with Chinese American composer Tan Dun’s The Banquet Sonata, whose theatrical colors and dramatic gestures reflect a musical language shaped by both Eastern and Western traditions. Together, these works offer a portrait of classical piano music continually enriched by popular culture, diverse identities, and cultural exchange.
