 mission **\n\nJ. S. Bach - Toccata in E minor\n\nOne of Bach's early works
 . Toccatas\, at the time\, were a way to show a performer's range and virt
 uosity. The fugue is very famous and several other Italian composers have 
 used this same melody. It is ambiguous who is the "originator" of the melo
 dy.\n\nL. Van Beethoven - Sonata in E minor\, Op.90 no. 27\n\nOne of Beeth
 oven's rare 2-movement sonatas\, and the first one to feature very descrip
 tive German tempo markings instead of the usual Italian. It was also a son
 ata written 5 years after Beethoven's previous piano sonata\, a very long 
 period of time - signifying the beginning of his "Late" period.\n\nS. Rach
 maninoff - Prelude op 23 no. 3 in D minor\nEtude Tableaux op.33 no.4 in D 
 minor\n\nA view into Rachmaninoff compositions in the same key. The prelud
 e is very overshadowed and not frequently performed. The etude is full of 
 inner voicing and march-like rhythms.\n\nIntermission\n\nF. Chopin - Noctu
 rne Op. 62 no. 2 in E major\n\nChopin's last nocturne published during his
  lifetime. It has call backs to Bach with its' contrapuntal tendencies\, a
 nd is very harmonically complex.\n\nR. Schumann - Symphonic Etudes (Étude
 s en forme de Variations) in C# minor\n\nThe main theme was written by an 
 amateur pianist which Schumann took and adapted for the piano. The composi
 tion went through several revisions\, of which the latest will be performe
 d (Leipzig 1852).\n\nNEW: see program notes** above ...\n2:35-3pm informal
