DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Groupmuse\nMusicians: Jay Julio\n\nJoin **[Sound Off:
Music for Bail](https://musicforbail.com/)** to ring in the new year with
our first Massivemuse of 2023 in partnership with some new and old friend
s at Playwrights Horizons Downtown's Moss Theater.\n\nAs many Groupmusers
may already know\, the Groupmuse Foundation's **[Planetary Music Movement]
(https://www.groupmuse.org/planetary-music)** (PMM) is *"on a mission to t
ransform music's culture by celebrating and showcasing the artistry of Bla
ck musicians and composers"* and we've worked together in the past to pres
ent string quartets written and performed by incredible Black artists. Thi
s time\, **Sound Off: Music for Bail** is collaborating with **Planetary M
usic Movement** and renowned activist orchestra **[PROTESTRA](https://www.
protestra.org/)** for their largest show yet.\n\nNew Orleans native and Ro
me Prize-winning composer **[Dr. Courtney Bryan](https://www.courtneybryan
.com/)** wrote her deeply affecting cantata\, *Yet Unheard* for solo voice
\, chorus\, and orchestra in collaboration with poet **[Sharan Strange](ht
tps://poets.org/poet/sharan-strange)** in 2016\, after the death of Sandra
Bland in pre-trial incarceration. Bryan's response to this death\, caused
by misogynoir\, police violence\, and incorporation of money in the US cr
iminal justice system serves as a lodestone to our musical programming. Ou
 r vocal soloist in *Yet Unheard*\, the multi-talented soprano/composer/imp
roviser **[Jasmine Wilson](https://jasmine-wilson.com/)**\, will present s
ome of her own music following. \n\nBefore the cantata\, **[Voices of Comm
unity Leaders and Activists NY](https://www.vocal-ny.org/)** (VOCAL-NY) Di
rector of Organizing\, **[Jawanza James Williams](https://jawanzajameswill
iams.com/)**\, will present testimony on **VOCAL-NY**'s work\, the progres
s of justice work\, and its future. And the show will open with strings\,
en masse: first\, movements from **[Frederick Tillis](https://www.fredtill
is.com/)**' *Spiritual Fantasy No. 12* for string quartet\, then **[Akua D
ixon](https://www.akuadixon.com/)**'s *Efua* arranged for string ensemble.
